For us, Hajnóczy Olaszrizling is more than just a wine - it's a statement. It is no coincidence that the first wine produced from a single vineyard at our winery is an Olaszrizling. We believe that this grape variety is particularly well-suited to expressing the unique characteristics of the wine region and showcasing the character of a specific vineyard. We also consider it to be the most important grape variety of Lake Balaton.
We admit that this may sound somewhat abstract and theoretical, but this is why the gold medal that we won at the Asia Wine Trophy at the end of last year is so important to us. It confirms that our wine is valuable in practice as well as in theory: it was tasted blind – i.e. without knowing the wine’s identity - by a jury of international experts on the other side of the world, who deemed it worthy of a gold medal.
The Asia Wine Trophy, held in South Korea, is the largest wine competition on the continent. As the only wine competition in Asia to enjoy the patronage of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), it is of particular interest from a market perspective, given that the jury includes representatives from some of the most important importing countries in Asia. The organisers combine the event with a programme called International Wine Week, which is exclusively open to industry professionals. Attendees can taste the wines entered into the competition and participate in lectures and masterclasses.
The second vintage of Hajnóczy Olaszrizling, from 2025, has already proven itself on multiple fronts. As well as the aforementioned medal, it also won gold at the international Olaszrizling wine competition GROW Du Monde and the Balatonfüred Wine Competition. The wine is well worth trying, as the extended ageing process it has undergone since its release has undoubtedly improved its flavour. Furmintfan, a writer for the Borrajongó blog, recently tasted the wine and described it as follows: "Alongside white-fleshed fruits, the aroma features a hint of clay and a salty breeze, while the flavour combines yellow apple and plum with a subtle salty-spicy undertone. It offers a full-bodied, broad mouthfeel with a firm core and a touch of creaminess on the palate”.
