Although Olaszrizling is one of the most popular grape varieties and can be found all over the country, it can be said that a large percentage of the most prestigious Olaszrizling comes from the wine regions on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The concentration of the top batches of the variety is particularly high near Csopak, which is why it is so valuable for us that Villa Gyetvai's 2024 Olaszrizling was chosen as the Olaszrizling of the Year at the Csopak and Surrounding Region Wine Communities Competition.
We launched our Gastro family of wines last year, and 2024 Olaszrizling is the second in a series of wines to be released under the new label, inspired by the fun of a Lake Balaton holiday.
The grapes for this wine come from the Szil vineyard between Paloznak and Lovas, which was one of the first plantations planted by our winery and has just turned seven years old. The vines need a few years of development and growth after planting to bear fruit, so the grapes from this vineyard were vinified for the first time only a few years ago.
In a harvest that was challengingly fast due to the summer heat, the Olaszrizling was picked at an ideal time, the must fermented in tanks at a controlled temperature according to the tried and tested recipe, then aged in barrels for a small part, but mostly in stainless steel, and finally the two batches were blended.
The 2024 vintage is still maturing in the bottle, but we are confident that it will match or surpass its predecessors. We won't release it until we feel it's in perfect condition, so in the meantime it's worth returning to the 2023 vintage, which is also a delight.
