The Austrian wine magazine Vinaria has made a comprehensive assessment of the Kékfrankos grape variety, searching for its best expressions in several countries. Among the Czech, German, Austrian, Slovakian, Slovenian and Hungarian Kékfrankos, the publication highlighted Villa Gyetvai's 2021 Kékfrankos in both the Hungarian and international top lists.
Last year, nearly ninety wineries from six countries dedicated to the cultivation of Kékfrankos came together to raise awareness of this special blue grape variety. Not only do these estates share a common bond with the grape variety, they also share the continental climate of Central Europe, characterised by moderate rainfall, cold and dry winters, late spring rains, warm summers with little rainfall and equally dry, even prolonged autumns.
The joint effort was highlighted at Austria's most important wine fair, VieVinum in Vienna, and was accompanied by a nine-page summary published this summer in Austria's leading wine magazine, Vinaria, which has a circulation of 22,000. The magazine focused on the most beautiful Kékfrankos from six countries, so it is a great recognition for us that the 2021 Villa Gyetvai was not only selected by the experts from the Hungarian Kékfrankos featured in the article, but was also included in the international top list, together with a Kékfrankos from Szekszárd and another one from Mátra.
It was not the first time that Kékfrankos had excelled at our winery, but we could tell that the 2021 vintage was going to be exceptional by the fact that it was an absolute favourite during the harvest. As the wine fermented and developed, we found ourselves involuntarily returning to this lot at tastings. After tank fermentation and malolactic fermentation, the Kékfrankos was aged in oak barrels for 11 months. What we like about this wine is that it shows the true character of the grape variety, offering the fruity notes and vitality so typical of Kékfrankos in a cheerful and elegant way.
