The first vintage of a wine is always critical, as it shows what the grapes are capable of, whether we have found the right style, whether consumers will like it and what the industry will think of it. That is why it was so important to us that our 2022 Syrah won a gold medal at the National Wine Competition.
This year marked the 44th National Wine Competition organised by the National Council of Wine Communities. Entries were received from all 22 Hungarian wine regions, and the jury tasted 890 wines from 239 wineries. "The National Wine Competition has become one of the most important professional forums in the domestic wine industry. The quality of the entries clearly demonstrates that Hungarian wine can compete with the best in the world. The key to success lies with wineries that can integrate innovation into their work while preserving traditional values," said János Frittmann, president of the National Council of Wine Communities.
The first vintage of Villa Gyetvai Syrah is from 2022. Our aim was to produce a modern red wine that retains its elegance and fruitiness. To achieve this, we fermented the wine in tanks and macerated the cap several times a day. Malolactic fermentation also took place during this process, after which the wine was settled in tanks. The Syrah then spent two years in barrels before being bottled in August 2024.
Our winemaker, Gábor Demjén, summed up his thoughts on the wine as follows: "This is how I imagine a Balaton red wine should be. Fruity, lively, yet a red wine through and through."
