In the autumn of 2024, the Semmelweis University National Wine Competition was held for the fourteenth time, with the aim of finding Hungarian wines that could represent the educational institution at its own events or in building international relations. We were successful in both the white and red wine categories, with our 2023 Rajnai Rizling and 2021 Kékfrankos winning gold qualifications.
"Organised for the fourteenth time, this wine competition is an important event for Semmelweis University. Every year we are getting better and better at tasting and judging, and we are able to recognize the values of wine with increasing confidence and consistency" - said Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector and President of the Wine Competition.
Forty-seven wineries submitted one hundred and seventy-four wines to this year's competition. The winners were awarded in five categories - white and red wines of the Carpathian Basin, white and red wines of international varieties and dessert wines, with first, second, third, fourth and fifth prizes awarded in each category.
Our 2023 Rajnai Rizling won a gold medal and second place in the white international variety category. This was great news for us, as we have returned to our traditional stainless steel tank vinification recipe for this Riesling, and although the wine is still in the bottle-ageing phase, we will be confident to launch it, as it has already won a gold medal at the Berlin Wine Trophy last summer, in addition to the Semmelweis Gold.
Our other winner is the 2021 Kékfrankos, also responsible for several medals and a lot of positive feedback. This variety has been important to us for a long time, we have made it in several styles, but with this vintage the feedback shows that we have really got it right. The wine won gold and fifth place in the Carpathian Basin red wine category.
