This spring two of our top white wines won gold medals at the Berlin Wine Trophy. Both hail from the 2022 vintage, one is a debut, our first Chardonnay, the other is our great favourite Riesling, but with a little twist this year.
The Berliner Wine Trophy is the world's largest wine competition under the auspices of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine. The patronage since 2004 guarantees that the judging of Germany's largest wine competition is carried out according to the strict standards of the professional organisation.
Hungary came sixth in the competition after Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Austria. The Villa Gyetvai Winery contributed with two gold medals.
One of the proud winners of the most prestigious medal is our first Chardonnay 2022, so we were particularly pleased to receive this professional recognition. The wine was bottled in early summer last year and released in the autumn to great acclaim, following a noisy tank fermentation and barrel ageing until bottling. It has since become a fixture on the wine lists of several restaurants.
The other gold medal went to a wine that has been one of our finest white wines since the winery's inception. 2022 was the third time we have bottled a Riesling, but this year was an exception, as most of it was aged in used barrels, rather than the usual, predominantly tank ageing. This technology is not common for Rieslings, which is why this recognition from the home of this grape variety means so much to us.
